The undergraduate programme in real estate and construction offers a course of study leading to the degree of BSc(Surveying). Established in 1988 as the first integrated programme in the world, the programme is an interdisciplinary academic programme fostering rigorous critical inquiry into the economics/financial, legal, and managerial aspects of real estate and construction. Teaching staff encourages students to think across the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines to develop creative academic approaches and solutions to real life issues and prepare students for careers in real estate, construction, banking, and finance.
The Department of Real Estate & Construction is the first in the world to have developed a fully integrated BSc (Surveying) course from which graduates can develop a career in any of the major surveying specialisms and which, through its basic academic approach, qualifies graduates for a wider range of employment opportunities. The programme offers an education based on an integration of knowledge to meet the challenges of globalization. This programme is unique, and is granted full exemption from all written examinations by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), for five HKIS surveying divisions, namely general practice, quantity surveying, building surveying, planning and development and property and facility management along with a range of RICS Faculties. This approach has a major advantage for students studying on the programme in that, until they graduate, there is no need for them to decide on the particular division or Faculty of surveying to enter. The professional degree of BSc (Surveying) is recognized by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) as well.
The BSc (Surveying) is a four-year full-time course. A significant difference between this department’s course and courses that are more conventional is the increased emphasis placed on the common academic underpinning and perspectives required by all surveyors rather than a more conventional form on the acquisition of solely technical skills. Each year of the course has two major components – the lecture course and surveying studio. The lecture course identifies the core of academic study and the studio provides applications of an inter-disciplinary nature covering the entire land conversion process.
