Admission

MUD brochure 2020

Admission to the MUD Programme is competitive. Approximately 30-36 students enrol each year from an applicant pool of about 150-200. Most applicants have strong academic background in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and related discipline. Some have professional experiences. Applicants are urged to focus on design portfolio, which is an important document in the admission procedure.  All online application forms and supporting materials must be received by noon, 31 December 2019 via the University’s online application system () and the Faculty’s MUD Application Documents Submission System () respectively

MUD offer email will be sent by the end of March 2020 or earlier. A confirmation letter will be sent by the end of April 2020 or earlier. The University thanks the applicants for their interest, but advises that only candidates shortlisted by 31 May 2020 at the latest will be notified of the application results.

List of Application Materials

  • An application form to be completed ( 
  • An electronic copy of a design portfolio in pdf format only demonstrating your most important design, research, drawings, creative or professional work. There are no limits on layout and embedded content, yet the portfolio should be one pdf file and should not exceed 95MB.  On the content page, you need to mark the date, the nature of project (i.e. academic, personal or professional), and collaboration information. If the project is collaborative work, you need to clearly indicate your role in it. Showing other people’s projects or undeclared teamwork are UNACCEPTABLE and will results in serious consequences.
  • A resume listing your education, employment, extra-curricular activities, honours, awards, professional affiliation and accreditation, publication, hobbies. There are no page limits to a resume.
  • A Personal Statement or Essay stating your motivations, career / academic goals, particular domains of interests in urban design, and other credentials that you think is helpful for the admission committee to evaluate your application (Maximum 1000 words)
  •  Official Transcripts from all undergraduate or graduate studies ever attended. A transcript should include course names, examinations taken, grades, degree or certificates awarded, and dates.
  • Official English test scores are required for applicants whose qualifications are from a university outside Hong Kong where the primary language of teaching or examination is not English.
    • TOEFL: 550 or above on the paper-based test or 213 or above on the computer-based test;
      or
    • IELTS: A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5;
  • Two letters of recommendations from university instructors, employers, or others that are capable of evaluating your potentials and credentials in urban design.
  • An interview is a required component of MUD admission. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for a Skype interview after the application deadline.

Composition Fees

运盈彩票官网 The composition fees for the Master of Urban Design in the academic year 2020-2021 is HK$ 205,700 (subject to final approval). The composition fees only cover tuition fees for courses on offer and student’s usage of University facilities, such as health clinic, sports centre and library facilities. It does not include fees such as costs for local and international field trips, printing, binding, stationery, books and model building.

Facilities

A new studio space at the 8/F Knowles Building is provided to MUD teaching activities and student work. Students can benefit from the facilities and technical know-how of Department of Urban Planning and Design, Landscape, Real Estate and Architecture. Students also could access the latest  and other  in the Department of Architecture.

Financial Assistance

Application from a list of developing countries in Asia are eligible to apply for the Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship (ADB) which provides financial assistance to well-qualified candidates to pursue postgraduate studies in city and building-related fields. The Scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses during the study in Hong Kong. More details can be found in the website (http://www.adb.org/JSP). Applicants from developed economies, Hong Kong and Mainland China included, are ineligible for the ADB scholarship.
